What is sketching?
We started thinking from what sketching meant to people in creative field.
We use various tools to enhance our creative. Paper, pen, software … however, sketching with pen and paper is the most important. Why?

Sketching is like a journey thru thoughts. Available anywhere with paper and pen, sketching recalls memories and informations scattered in the brain, then connecting those by sorting in hierarchy. Connected memories and informations are activated by bonding with secondary matters, transforming into the spring of unseen new ideas. Also by repeating the sketch, an idea would be deepened and polished. Thoughts would be extended. Creative would make a big transformation (Quantum Jump), and heightened to reach the unseen height. Therefore, sketch could be said as most important.

Beginning with the murals of Lascaux and Altamira in Europe, and also Africa, Australia, South East Asia, South America, Meso-America, etc., various cave paintings are found all over the world. Mural is the oldest drawing and sketch by human being. Also, drawing letter characters were added after its being created. Letters are signs made of lines and dots to convey and record words. In many cases they originate in pictograms (visual signs / picturesque letters), which eventually were simplified as letters. Therefore, writing letters could also be said as a form of sketch.

Mud plate and stick, papyrus and ink, wood board and brush, and at last paper and pen … though time may change the tools and the difference in cultural spheres, the action sketch has never changed. And it won’t change for quite a while. Stretching the understanding, in the memory of human species that has been hand down continuously for long years, it even seems sketching itself has been instilled into us as a spring that expands thoughts and enable innovative ideas. Enhancing and expanding the human creativity and logic, sketch takes a large part in human evolution.

Symbol
As written above, sketch is an action that extends thoughts and ideas, as well as sorting information in hierarchy. This is creative thinking and logical thinking, two types of thinking simultaneously. SKETCH NOTE symbol is based on enabling these two thoughts at same time. The “circle: ◯” stands for creative thinking where as the “square: ◯” stands for logical thinking. They form the first letters S and N of SKETCH NOTE. Also, since sketch sorts and connects memories scattered in brain to become a new idea, the minimum unit of an idea is expressed as ◯▢△. (◯, ▢ and divided △ are minimum units that compose a material.)

Typeface
We created an original Sans-serif typeface for SKETCH NOTE in extremely simple structure. Sans-serif was chosen because it has the casual and comfortable impression by its use of simple lines and curves. (In contrast, serif has academic, stiff, and somewhat daunting impression.) Jotting down ideas that arouse and the act of simply visualizing itself is something anyone can achieve, which is simple and casual. Rather it is not a special nor academic manner. SKETCH NOTE which you can leave a note whenever idea pops up, is an item one should have simply in their pocket or one should always casually wear upon. This is why SKETCH NOTE type face utilizes San Serif which is simple and casual.

Dynamic identity
Also, choosing from the basic five leather color combinations (pink & turquoise, gray & yellow, black & silver, ivory, brown & black) , SKETCH NOTE is able to FAB with UV printers or laser cutters, which enables creating various looks as user likes. For such product characteristic, we chose the dynamic identity system where you can freely combine colors and patterns that compose the symbol.
